Harry was apprenticed to the Scottish Motor Traction Company in Fountainbridge, Edinburgh as an automobile engineer. Harry started his own business in the Polwarth area of Edinburgh
just before the Second World War. During the War he was drafted into war work
at Marine Gardens,
Portobello
After the War, he started up again, this time at Haymarket Garage, in partnership with Fergus Farquharson, an old friend. Fergus ran the office side of the business and Harry the Technical side. The business was sold when the partners decided to retire.
Harry was a keen golfer, and was Captain of Baberton Golf Club. He was
also a member of Kilspindie Golf Club at Aberlady and Colinton Bowling Club.
Harry married Elizabeth Brown (always known as Lil) on the 12th September 1942, at North
Merchiston Church, Edinburgh,
with the reception being held at the Charlotte Rooms. They had one daughter.
